Posted: December 22nd, 2009 | Author: Jennifer Price | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

Did you know that statistics show us that your home is around 60% less likely to be broken into or vandalized if it is equipped with a home security device? There really is no doubt that the installation of a security system is vital these days.

Selecting your security device: In the world we live in today the range of different home security systems available is considerable so one must spend some time to properly evaluate each system.

Your location is the first thing you need to take into consideration and depending on it you can decided what is the burglary rate; however, that may not be entirely accurate as at times thieves will travel great distances to make a move on a property. What have you got to protect in your home? For example, do you have elderly folks living alone during the day or for long periods of time? Are young children sometimes left at home or is the home left vacant for considerable amounts of time?

After going through these questions one by one, it should be a whole lot easier for you to make an educated decision when comparing all the different devices.

The more classical wired security systems

Still today the older systems with wires are quite popular mostly because people are accustomed to them and more often than not they can be cheaper, however Home Security System Wiring can be considerably difficult for many of us.

Unless you are a competent electrician or at least have the necessary knowledge to deal with home security wiring, your best route will be more than likely to hire the services of a professional.

It is imperative that home security system wiring be done in such a way that the wires are not visible by the naked eye, failing to do so could leave a window of opportunity open to a competent burglar.

An additional thing to take into consideration is how well protected your wiring is, you must make sure that your wiring will stay dry at all times.

Home security system wiring can be a complex job, which can easily mess your security system up if it is not done adequately. Because of this one should seriously consider getting in professionals to do their installation if they do not have the necessary electrician skills.

How To Get Rid Of Household Mould

Posted: December 22nd, 2009 | Author: Jennifer Price | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , | No Comments »

So, you’ve finished unpacking the last of the boxes after moving in a few months ago. You open up your closet to get the last of your boxes only to be suprised by a nasty odor coming from inside somewhere. After a bit of looking, you find mould.

There are of course many varieties of mould but all of them prosper in moist enviroments which can come from humid air, seeping walls or any surrounding fabric that contains moisture. It may be that your local area is prone to humid air for example certain climates and changing seasons will obviously affect the humidity in your house. Air dehumidifiers can help in all these cases

Mould can cause allergic reactions in some people and also trigger lung irritability in people who aren’t normally allergic to these things. It can damage anything it is fixed to and create a bad smell which can be ongoing and hard to banish. It could be a sign of a problem with the drainage inside of your house or possibly an air moisture problem.

To tackle mould get a mask and eye shield so that you don’t put yourself at risk of contacting with potentially dangerous mould spores. After washing off as much as you can with soap and water you could try a specific lotion for mildew removal or possibly try a gallon of water mixed with just a quarter of a cup of chlorine bleach.

Obviously depending upon the level of damage any damaged materials will have to be replaced and unless you solve the original moisture problem it will most likely need replacing again from further damage.

It may well be worth purchasing a humidity meter () which if it shows a reading of more than 50 then you should really look into buying a dehumidifier. On the market today there are a wide range of dehumidifiers for sale starting from the 0 price. Here are a few guidelines to follow when purchasing a dehumidifier for your home: If you need a dehumidifier in more than one room then you will likely be better off purchasing a whole house dehumidifier rather than one for each room. It will do the job more efficiently and last longer than running several smaller dehumidifiers continuously which will incur more maintenance costs.

Also don’t forget that if you will be running your home dehumidifier in particularly cold places that it has an auto-switch off when it starts to freeze. Not having one of these means that it t will keep running a damage itself if the temperature drops below freezing. Make sure you check that the noise level is not too high before you buy anything.

Further more it may well be worth getting a trusted builder/contractor to take a look at the area to check for possible causes and remedies of the moisture problem. Also get the advice of a family doctor about possible allergic symptoms and other risks that you may be exposed to so you are aware of all of the dangers.

Despite the cost of doing the above in the long run the value of your house and the health of your family should be your priority and taking a few simple steps such as buying a home dehumidifier (Comfort Aire dehumidifiers are particulary highly recommended) would be well worthwhile in the long run.

I Want To Build A Log Cabin!

Posted: December 21st, 2009 | Author: Jennifer Price | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , | No Comments »

Most of us would love to have a log cabin in our garden, but is it possible to make that dream come true?  Quite a few kits are on the market, but the best and most exciting way is to build a log cabin yourself.  Read on to find out how to do it.

The traditional log cabin design is rectangular or square, with only four corners.  Other shapes are more complicated to build, and therefore more expensive.

Although easy to build, log cabins must be designed thoroughly from the start and you should get professional quality plans and expert advice to help you do this.  Also think about getting the essential materials list done by these experts – it will save you much time and money.  Good quality plans are worth their cost many times over, and will include all the necessary design calculations.

A good size for a log cabin home would be about 20 ft by 30 ft.  Look for an elevated site to avoid damp and make a reasonably flat area to accommodate the structure.

The floor of your garden log cabin could be the earth itself or, more likely, wooden planks.  The latter would be preferable and more hygenic.

The plans will show you what size and type of logs to use, and these could be a bit rough and ready.  Don’t be alarmed – all log cabins get their charm from this!  The method for joining logs at each corner is called the lock-joint.  To form this joint a notch is cut at each end of the log and about one foot in.  The notch is cut nearly halfway through the log, joining with a similar notch in the mating log to produce that famous log cabin appearance.

If you have built a proper foundation, such as a concrete base, fix the first course of logs to it using anchor bolts and make sure these logs are levelled properly.  The floor joists should be spaced every two feet along the side logs. Continue to build courses of logs in this way until you reach the planned height of the door (about 6ft 8in).  At this stage cut out openings for the door and windows – tacking wooden battens to the logs to keep them steady in the process – and fasten door and window jambs in place.  Finish the log courses until the final wall height has been reached.

Shorter logs will now be laid at each end, still mated to side logs, to produce the roof pitch found in the plans.  Finish with a ridge pole.  Garden log cabins usually have roofs made from wooden planks or shingles.  The plans will have a number of options and how to build them.  The gaps between the logs should be caulked using a mud and moss mix – the kids will love to help at this point!

Lastly fit the floor planks, door and windows to your log cabin.  You could make your own door from old planks and battens, but these often warp badly over time and it is more sensible to search for an old antique or salvage piece and customize your log cabin to fit it.  You could decide to have unglazed windows since many garden log cabins merely have shutters but, if not, the blueprints should showl you how to make suitable opening windows.

You can use all kinds of ideas when building a log cabin interior. Many have fireplaces or wood-burning stoves, because a fire is part of the log cabin dream for many people.  You should be careful about installing one, however, because of the very real risk of heat damage to the walls of the log cabin.  There are often local regulations about fitting fires in wooden buildings, and you are the one responsible for complying with these.  Good plans should include proper advice and guidance on this subject.

Finally, you might think about fitting a solar panel for making free electricity and a solar heater for your hot water, particularly if your log cabin is off the beaten track.

And remember to plan well ahead when building a log cabin, so that it is ready in time for winter!
